Origins
The olive tree is a constant feature in Mediterranean culture. Since ancient times, it has been worshipped, planted and cultivated throughout the basin of the Mare Nostrum. The Egyptians and Hebrews, the Phoenicians, Cretans and Greeks all considered it to be a sacred tree, a symbol of wisdom, peace and glory, and identified it with life and eternity due to its extraordinary longevity.
According to Greek mythology, Athena created the olive tree as a gift to the city of Athens, and by way of thanks its citizens declared her their patron goddess. The divine council also rewarded Athena, since her gift – as compared to the horse offered by her opponent Poseidon – was a tree capable of providing light for the dark nights, a soothing balm for injuries, and food bringing health and energy. Inspired by this story and by Athena’s lucidity, La Cultivada was born, with its little, bright-eyed owl – companion to the goddess and the emblem of a new state of understanding.
